Silicone Yay or Nay?
YAY OR NAY: SILICONE
You have undoubtedly come into contact with silicones in hair care. But what exactly are they and what effect do they have on the hair?
Silicones are synthetic substances that can be compared to liquid plastic. They come in many different forms, but to spare you the difficult details, we'll stick to water-soluble and water-insoluble. The latter in particular are used in shampoos that you can find at the drugstore.
Why are silicones added to hair products? Mainly to protect the hair from heat, make it smoother and easy to comb. They also soften the effect of the aggressive substance SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) that irritates the scalp.
Isn't that great, all those features? Yes and no... Although silicones do help, they are still harmful to the hair and the environment. This is especially the case for the water-insoluble varieties found in most hair products. The silicone wraps your hair in a kind of protective layer. After each use, a layer is added and so it continues. That's what we call build-up. The hair becomes heavy and the ends get a crunchy effect.
The silicone gives a false shine and obscures the fact that your hair is actually damaged. Your hair looks like it is healthy and feels soft. But actually your hair is dehydrated and carries chemical residues. In addition, silicones are harmful to the environment because they have the same properties as plastic and are therefore not easily degradable.
